Welcome to No Thru Traffic – a blog about two Oregon graduates’ adventure of a lifetime.
No Thru Traffic was devised as a great trip, an adventure, and an experiment in liberation. For one of the riders more than the other (I’ll let you guess which), there was a gradually building yet constantly pervasive desire to do something different. Sure ‘taking a year off’ and ‘motorcycle trips’ are both typical stuff that white people like, but a cliché opportunity for a trip quickly cascaded into an experiment in living.
We both decided that it was time to step from the ladders of our conventional career tracks and do something different. It was time to see and experience things that would force me to step outside of my comfort zone and take a deep breath.
And so, on July 20th, 2009 we will pack our motorcycles and depart on a month-long trip to see the great American countryside. We don’t yet know exactly where we will be going, sure we have a rough idea of places we’d like to see, but this trip more than any other will certainly be about the journey rather than the destination.
Before deciding that this trip was the medicine needed to cure my (Alex) pathetic early onset of a quarter-life crisis, I had never owned or ridden a motorcycle. I had camped, of course, but everything else would be new. A new mode of transportation, new places to go, and hopefully many new experiences along the way.
